PA#5: We say. I say.

Write a paragraph summarizing the topic of your wiki page. Discuss its proposed content, organization, divisions, and your part in it.

Important: Find appropriate transitional devices in TSIS and use them to mark the movement of the paragraph. Boldface those transitional devices.

Your paragraph should have the following content in the order listed.

1. The topic of the wiki

2. Any explanation required to clarify the topic

3. The purpose of the wiki

4. Division into parts

5. The part that you will write about

6. The way your part helps fulfill the purpose

7. An example or detail from your part that illustrates how your part fulfills the purpose.

Upload your paragraph as a comment to this blog post by Sunday, 2/5 at 5 PM. As usual, bring a hard copy to class on Monday.  Please note the deadlines. A few paragraphs have been coming in late, which makes it more difficult for me to prepare class. Also, a couple of you are not posting paragraphs. Get with the program.

  2. Our wiki page will be on the history of Ohio Wesleyan University. This university has a very interesting past that dates back to 1842 when Rev. Adam Poe encouraged the residence of Delaware to purchase 10 acres of land and establish the university. Our wiki page will educate the audience on OWU’s history from 1842 to present day, and will hopefully encourage future students to join Ohio Wesleyan and continue to write the history of this great university. The wiki page will go into detail on four subjects at OWU, residential halls, academics, sports, and Greek life. I will be writing on the residential halls here at Ohio Wesleyan; each residential hall has an interesting past that adds to the unique history of this school. For example Elliott hall was the first dormitory and academic facility used when the school opened, it was also the first official building in the university's history.

  3. Our wiki will be about the history of Ohio Wesleyan. The university was founded in 1842 and has a very rich and deep history. The purpose of our wiki will be to inform our readers about Ohio Wesleyan's history and how its changed over time. With this information we hope to attract new students to the university. The wiki will be divided into four main topics, sports, greek life, residential halls, and academics. I will be going into more depth on the history of sports at Ohio Wesleyan. With close to half the student population at Ohio Wesleyan being athletes sports are an essential part of the university and its history. For example the very first sports team at Ohio Wesleyan dates all the way back to 1875 when the university created the football team.

  4. Our wiki will take an in-depth look at the great history of Ohio wesleyans athletic facilities. The OWU sports facilities have great culture and history, dating all the way back to Selby stadium being built in 1929. The hope is to bring awareness to current and future bishops of the culture and history of our great campus. Each member of our group will be looking into a specific facilities history and unforgettable moments that took place. I will expand on the Jay Martin soccer complex. Also known as Roy rike field the home of the men’s and women’s battling bishop soccer teams. Rike has a great history and many unforgettable moments that are a huge part in Owu athletic history. For example Rike use to host football games and track meets in 1934 until Owu bought it for collegiate soccer in 1964.

  5. For our writing assignment we have decided to write about “why do people drop out of OWU?”. Despite the fact that OWU manages to create such a conducive and productive environment for all its students, there are people who drop out of the university every year. And we want to get to the bottom of this. Thus we have decided to pick this topic for our wiki assignment as this will enable us to find out the real reasons why people drop out. Our assignment will give everyone true reflection about why people drop out and will hopefully convince those who are thinking about dropping out to rethink their decision. But in order to finish the assignment on time we have decided to divide the work between us. One of us will go the admissions office and ask people over there why some students drop out. Two of us will take interviews from students to ask them what they think about the university and have they ever thought about dropping out. Then after collecting all the data we will sit together and decide what particular part each person will write about. I will go to the office of admissions and ask them why do most people drop out and what is the drop out rate. This will enable us to figure out how many people drop out and what is the official reason they give to the university about leaving. Sometimes people don’t tell others why they are dropping out but tell the university the actual reason so official reasons will give us a better reflection of the truth.-Taimur Iftikhar

  6. Our wiki will be about the reasons students decide to drop out of Ohio Wesleyan. Every year, students drop out of OWU, and we want to figure out the reasons why, so we can make the wiki and inform students looking to join here. We are dividing the work two ways. One group of two will go to the admissions office and ask them some information about students who drop out. Then, the other group of two will interview students they know that are thinking of dropping out or are definitely dropping out and figure out why. I will be interviewing some students, because I know a couple people that have told me they are dropping out after this semester. We want to interview people who are dropping out or thinking about it, because we want to find out the reasons they are leaving to help inform students thinking about joining OWU.

  7. Our Wiki page is on the the track and field program at Ohio Wesleyan. It will go into detail about the past, current, and future of the program. The purpose of our wiki will be to inform readers about the rich history of the track and field program at Ohio Wesleyan. We also want to encourage prospective students to join the team because the program is one of the top at OWU. The paper will be divided up into parts of the coaches, how the team is a family, and the workout or schedule the team has. I will be discussing the coaches aspect of the paper. I will talk about all coaches and the current one. I will also discuss his thought on how he coaches and I will talk about his assistant coaches. For example, I will show how dominant the coach Kris Boey has been over his 15 years as a coach at OWU.

    Paragraph Assignment #5
    5 February 2017
    Wiki Description

Our wiki assignment will be about Ohio Wesleyan’s track and field team. This team is one of the most successful athletic teams on campus and has been around for at least 40 years. The goal is to encourage prospective student athletes to join the track and field team. To do this, we will discuss the various aspects of the team including the coaching, the family, and the workout aspects. I will be talking about the family aspect of the team because it is very important to have a team that supports and encourages its athletes. For example, at the Bob Shannon Track Invitational on Saturday every athlete not participating in the 4x400 created a wall to cheer on the athletes that were running. In response to this support, each runner ran with a smile on their face because of the great amount of support.

  9. In our wiki we will be discussing the different historical backgrounds of various buildings on campus. Each building has its own unique history which adds to the culture and community of Delaware, Ohio. The purpose of this wiki is to inform students about the interesting environment on campus and why the history is so important. The wiki will be divided into the histories of the athletic, residential, recreational, and academic buildings. I specifically will be discussing the recreational buildings on campus such as the Student Observatory and the Richard M. Ross Art Museum. Discussing this topic will help students appreciate the campus they live on and how the history leading up to now affects how we live today. For instance the Richard M. Ross Art Museum was once a post office but has now been converted to display the artwork of artist all around the world, improving the accessibility students have to other cultures.

  10. For our Wiki assignment our group will be taking a look at Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities. Here at OWU we take a lot of pride in our athletic teams and our great facilities because of all of the rich history and culture that it's built on. For my part of the assignment I will be talking about Selby Stadium. Selby was built in 1929 and can hold up to 9,100 spectators. Selby is the home of the Battling Bishop football, men's and women's track & field, men's and women's lacrosse, and field hockey teams. There have been so many unforgettable moments that have taken place here, and that is why I choose to talk about it.

  11. My group and I are writing about the fascinating history of OWU; and how meaningful it is to the staff and students. Ohio Wesleyan has a vast history that most people are not aware of. This essay will inform the reader about the history of OWU; while persuading potential students to attend Ohio Wesleyan. We will be covering the topics of the residential history, the academic history, the sports history, and the Greek life history. I will be covering the Greek life aspect of the essay. Many potential college students are interested in joining fraternities and sororities. By researching the past of Greek life, interviewing previous members, and also currently going through the process myself; I will be able to show how the rush experience has evolved over time. Joining Greek life is no longer as intimidating because of how strict the rules of hazing have become.

  12. Our wiki page will discuss about Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities. The athletic facilities at Ohio Wesleyan can date back to Selby Stadium in 1929 where the span of history begins. The objective of our wiki is for our assigned project members to to inform attending and future attending bishops about our campuses historical facilities. Our group members will each be assigned a facility on campus to learn more about. For my assigned facility I plan to find more in depth history about the simpson querrey fitness center and former pfeiffer natatorium. Pfeiffer natatorium fostered many famous notable Bishop alumni, including national champions in its span of history. An example of how far in history our facilities are goes back in time to where pfeiffer natatorium was in the basement of edwards gymnasium, which has hel events from 1954-2010.

  13. For our wiki we will be writing about “why do students drop out of OWU?”. One major issue that OWU faces is student retention. Many students drop out during their freshman year and we thought it would be interesting to learn more about why this happens. With our wiki we would like to further explore some of the causes and go more in depth with this issue. To complete the assignment we have divided the project into two main parts. Two of us will go to the admissions office and try to gather information there about dropout rates and why they think students drop out. The other two of us will interview students on campus about their ideas and opinions on the dropping out issue. I will be performing interviews and I will write about their responses. For example I could interview a student who closely knew someone who dropped out. This could give a great perspective on this issue.

  14. Our wiki assignment will be about Ohio Wesleyan’s track team. What we will be trying to do is encourage future student athletes to join the track and field team. We will talk about the various parts of the team including the coaching staff, the family, and the workout aspects. I will be talking about the rich history behind each of the coaches which is important for future athletes to know. The coaches build this program and it is an important aspect for each athlete to know who they will be coached by and the credentials each coach has.

  15. My group and I have agreed to write about “why students leave/drop out of OWU?” OWU has so many great things that students can benefit from, yet students are constantly leaving, so we are trying to figure out the “why?” Writing about this can be a deep connection with students, and not only students but teachers as well. Reading about something in this manner can be interesting in ways that can cause many to think about their own experience at OWU. The way we will conduct and get this paper divided among the members in our group is by giving each member a specific job. One of us will talk to students who are considering leaving OWU, another student will go to admissions and ask for input upon the subject, and lastly someone will give a detailed reason on why it’s important to stay, basically as a counter to the claim. My job in this group project is to connect with students who left or planning to leave and closely listen out to the why to our question, and gather the information to put it in a nice structured paragraph. My part is one of the most important parts only because there is nothing better than a testimony by a student that already left and from a student that wants to leave. Although admissions can tell us the why, hearing from a former student gives us clearer insight.
