Greek life has been on campus, at Ohio Wesleyan University, since 1853. In 1853, the first fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, joined campus. Originally, the fraternity were frowned upon by the faculty and staff. The fraternities were talked about as annoying organizations, but over time the fraternities and sororities have been able to emphasize the importance of grades and unity. Nowadays, the Greek Life on campus offers great opportunities to students. Joining fraternities and sororities gives students chances excel in the classroom, to network with previous alumni, serve their community, make life-long friendships, and it also looks impressive to potential employers. A common misconception is that pledges are hazed and bullied by their older peers in Greek Life. This may have been true about 20 years ago, but since then laws have been put in place to protect the pledges. Also, the focus of Greek Life has shifted more toward academic excellence. Fraternities and sororities are now given scholarship money for getting certain GPA’s, based on the organizations requirements. Greek Life brings college students together, and helps students network with other brothers and sisters.

ReplyDeleteEvery sports team comes with fans, players and coaches. Coaches are the leaders or the boss of the team. They tell the team what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and why to do it. All coaches are different and for a team to be great everything has to have a perfect fit. The Ohio Wesleyan Track & Field program has struck gold when they hired Kris Boey. Kris Boey is in his 15th year as the track & field coach for the battling bishops. In June of 2010 he was also given the position of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, which adds administrative duties to his head coaching duties. Boey is a native of Grafton Township and he graduate of Midview High School where he is also in the Hall of Fame. He then went on to be apart of the Track & Field team at Baldwin Wallace University. While at Baldwin Wallace Boey had a very impressive resume, which holds school records in the 500, 800, and the 4x800. He won 4 individual OAC championship, two All-Ohio championships, and he qualified for four Division III Championship meets. As a coach, is resume may be even more impressive. Since he has been coaching, the Bishops track program has become one of the most dominant programs in the conference. Over Boey’s rein, he has produced 1744 qualifiers, 38 All- Americans, 39 NCAC Athlete of the Year selections, 436 NCAC championships, 1078 All- NCAC honorees, and have broken 162 school records. His philosophy on coaching is to have total development of a student athlete and to put him or her the best position to improve. They compete against all levels Division I,II, and III which allows each athlete to grow as a competitor. With Boey as coach, the Ohio Wesleyan Track & Field programs looks to keep its dominance.
The reason why learning about the buildings on campus is important is because it gives the students a sense of pride and unity at Ohio Wesleyan University. Some may people may inquire “why would I even be interested in learning about the campus buildings, let alone Meek Aquatic Center? Meek has been shown to be modern for its time. Meek has a geothermal energy system, meaning it takes heat produced by the internal heat of the earth, to heat and cool both the air and the water. For this reason, Meek has been awarded by the Unites States Green Building Council the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Certification. This is one of the reasons, among many other interesting facts, to learn about the historical significance of the athletic buildings on campus.
ReplyDeleteSome people may wonder “How does knowing the history of buildings on campus affect the students?” and believe that it is a waste of time to learn about. This way of thinking stems from the view that learning about past events is not important for today. However, the history of specific buildings on campus can give students a sense of pride and belonging while attending Ohio Wesleyan University. For instance, the Branch Rickey Arena was named for the OWU alumnus who is famous for integrating Major League Baseball by signing Jackie Robinson. Knowing facts such as this can provide students here with a feeling of pride for their association with OWU. Without enquiring about the history of the buildings on campus, one may never learn the fascinating past that Ohio Wesleyan University has to offer.

Paragraph Assignment #9
14 February 2017
The Team as A Family
Anyone that participates in a sport knows that it means more to be part of a team that feels like a family. Athletes want to know their team supports them and will encourage them in every practice and meet. The Ohio Wesleyan Track and Field team ensures that the team feels like a family and works together to get better. One of their most important mottos is “we stand alone together” because even when it feels like they are competing alone in an event, the rest of the team has got their back and is always supporting them. For example, at the Bob Shannon Track Invitational every athlete not participating in the 4x400 created a wall to cheer on the athletes that were running. As a result, every runner ran with a smile on their face through the pain just because it felt amazing knowing their teammates were encouraging them. In addition, the track team does team bonding activities to get to know each other. By getting to know other teammates it creates lasting friendships that make going to practice more than just going for a run. One of the many team bonding activities includes going to coach’s house to carve pumpkins in the fall. Activities like this allow each athlete to spend time in a stress free environment making memories and creating a bond that strengthens the support of each team member.
Everybody has different reasons for deciding to drop out of OWU. We thought it would be a good idea to interview some students who we knew were either going to drop out, or thinking of dropping out of OWU. One student said, “I don’t like how far away from home I am. It’s hard not being able to go home once or twice a month and seeing them I didn’t think it would be this hard for me, but it’s really getting to me.” OWU has students from all over the world, and this is a very common reason for most students to leave. Besides Ohio, California has the second most students that attend here. When kids are deciding where they want to go to College, they say they want to get as far away from their parents as possible. Some can handle being far away from their parents, and love having the freedom. However, for most students it’s a lot harder for them to be far away from their parents than they thought it would be.

ReplyDeleteFirst I will talk about the many workouts for sprinters. In the off season many students are laying around and not doing much but, committing to Ohio Wesleyans track team requires you to do work outs during off season. For example, in the fall on Mondays athletes will do five sets of twenty meter dashes, four sets of thirty meter dashes, three sets of forty meter dashes. In addition, all sprinters will do this work out 3 times every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Once practices start there are many sprint drills that athletes go through such as, the whistle drill where athletes will sprint as hard as they can and when the coach blows the whistle athletes will stop and backpedal. But when the coach blows the whistle again, athletes will have to start sprinting again. This drill helps work on the athletes ability to accelerate and their speed by having to suddenly be able to sprint 100% after backpedaling. There will also be many days where the coaches allow the athletes to recover from the running. During the recover periods there is a lot of dynamic and static stretching to help keep the muscles lose and to be able to take the constant running the season has in store for all athletes.
ReplyDeleteOne important feature at Ohio Wesleyan is its residential halls, which holds a variety of students that come from all over the world. Without these living halls OWU wouldn’t be able to have such a diverse group of students. At OWU there are currently seven different residential halls that house up to 1,260 men and women, but the very first living hall was Stuyvesant Hall also known as Stuy constructed in 1930. After a year of construction Stuy opened as a women’s dormitory in 1931 and held accommodations for 254 students. Stuy continued to house women until WWII, From 1941-1945 Stuy held US navy men. After WWII stuy started to house both men and women as it does today. Without this major step of building living halls Ohio Wesleyan wouldn’t be as diverse for it would only appeal to a small group of people.
ReplyDeleteStudents here at Ohio Wesleyan take so much pride in Selby Stadium because it's arguably the nicest stadium in Division 3 athletics. The stadium was built in 1929 and as the capacity to hold up too 9,100 spectators. The stadium received new lights and a new magnificent scoreboard in 2011, and brand new field turf in 2014-15. To make things even better the stadium also received a brand new press box, new bleachers and new refurbished locker rooms. Since Ohio Wesleyan has such great history, alumni are constantly donating money back to the school so we can upgrade things like Selby. The thing that makes this school, the sport programs and the athletic facilities amazing is that the alumni care about it, and they are constantly taking care of these things by donating money. Student athletes, spectators and the Alumni all admire Selby stadium because it represents how much history this school has.
ReplyDeleteOhio Wesleyan has a rich history when it comes to their sports programs. Around half of the student population play on one of the twenty one sports teams on campus. The history of sports on campus dates all the way back to 1875 when the first formal athletic team was created, the football team. This made Ohio Wesleyan one of the first teams in Ohio to create an organized football team. During that year they played three games against Ohio State University, losing all three. Even though the football team was created in 1875 it took fifteen years before official colors were selected and started playing its intercollegiate games.
ReplyDeleteAt Ohio Wesleyan University there is a great history of athletic success that brings a sense of pride. As a result current and future bishops should know the history of athletics at Ohio Wesleyan. Roy Rike field the complex later renamed after the great owu coach Jay Martin,Host both the mens and women soccer team which has had some great success in the past. Roy Rike field has been apart of some huge sporting memories and has a rich history. Without knowing the roots of our athletics, students are missing out on a lot of very interesting facts and history of the university.
ReplyDeleteThere are a variety of reasons as to why students decide to drop out of Ohio Wesleyan. The reasons students give when leaving OWU are quite arbitrary and vary from person to person. Reasons like a lack of academic preparation. This entails that students feel that the studies in college are too rigorous and become really stressful for them. And since they are unable to handle the pressure of studies they drop out. Another reason students give is that they are not able to afford OWU, despite the generous scholarships the university gives out. Currently 33% of the students at OWU are on financial aid, which is offered by the government. But despite this some students still find it hard to pay the university tuition and end up dropping out. Whereas other reasons point towards students not being satisfied with the university itself. Many people do not like the food over here or feel that the university is too far away from the main city. Not only that but also, many students feel homesick and prefer transferring to a university that is closer to their home. Last year 19% of the students from the batch of 2019 dropped out after the first year.
ReplyDeleteWhen asked Student A “Why does he like Ohio Wesleyan,” he answered “because it gives me the opportunity to grow as a person.” The same question was asked to Student B and he answered, “OWU doesn’t allow me to grow as the person I want to be.” I then asked the same two students, if the reason they gave why they like OWU will be a reason they will stay or leave, they both said “yes.” I then wanted to figure out why would people leave OWU so I interviewed students and just about every student stated in their own way that “this school doesn’t meet my expectations!” I then wanted to figure out more about this expectation thing students were talking about, so I went to admissions and asked them “what do students mean when they say this school doesn’t meet their expectations? Admissions stated, “some people just don’t like it.” Which is very understandable. On the other hand, student B asks me “what would be a reason you would stay?” I told him for one this school allows me to explore and take on different opportunities that are presented to me. Secondly, I’ve met people who I look up to and I would hate to lose them so therefore I want to stay. Lastly, I told them it gives me the reason to grow and develop a mindset that I want to develop.
ReplyDeleteOne of the major issues Ohio Wesleyan faces at the moment is a poor retention rate. Across campus people are talking about President Rock’s plan to drastically increase enrollment. Many students seem skeptical with the plan because it is widely known that many students end up transferring or dropping out of OWU. How is this plan supposed to work and maintain its goals when roughly 20% of freshman drop out every year? Even this year we all know people have left for various reason so we wanted to dive deeper and learn more about the causes of this problem. Throughout the essay, we explore through the perspectives of the admissions office and the students some possible reasons for the retention rate issue and what might need to change to see an improvement in the rate.
