PA# 6: They Say, but I Say

In PA#3 you established a point of view (a thesis) on a subject and divided your support of that point of view into separate sub-arguments.

In PA#4 you stated and supported one of those sub-arguments.

For PA#6, consider an argument against your position (a counter-argument). State it and explain it clearly and objectively. Then state an argument (a refutation) responding to the counter-argument. Them, explain your refutational argument and provide evidence that supports it.

1. Topic sentence/ statement of the counter-argument

2. Explanation of the counter-argument Don't spend too much time here (a sentence or two), but you should be clear and objective. You might even consider quoting a phrase or two as you state your opponents point of view.)

3. State your refuting argument.

4. Explain it.

5. Provide some evidence that it is true.

Use the templates/ transitions in TSIS to indicate the moves you are making.

  1. A common misconception among most people is that innovation only comes from the head producers in companies. Most people believe that new inventions always come from these creative people that are highly ranked in the production process in big corporations. In reality, all people are able to think creatively and innovate. As consumers, we are able to experience products from different views than the producer. The consumers’ opinions on products are how innovation starts. For example, the mountain bike was invented by a normal group of guys from California. These guys were frustrated that there were no bikes that had the ability of riding off-road. As consumers, they decided to assemble different parts from different types of bikes, and combine them together to make the first mountain bike. It took time for the mountain bike to become popular. It was originally called the “clunker,” but thirty years later, the mountain bike accounts for 60% of all bike sales. This example highlights the fact that consumers can be producers, and even inventors sometimes. Also, this shows that innovation can start with a small idea and turn into an extremely popular product.

  2. Many people today may wonder “Why is important to be an environmentalist?” This thought process may stem from ignorance or simply from refuting the argument because they do not believe that the environment needs help. However, it is important for people to care about the environment because there are already many negative effects from previous neglect of Earth. For example, the increase of the overall temperature on Earth is and will cause more radical weather changes which effect the whole ecosystem on Earth. In addition to weather effects, climate change also has many negative effects on the health of people and animals. Thus, it is important to start worrying about the environment now and change bad habits so we can all have a safer future.

  3. The biggest benefit of animal testing is it reduces the harm to humans. By testing on animals we can get an idea of how it might affect humans, so if we come across a drug or treatment that kills animals we know not to use it on humans for it may result in the same outcome. But testing on animals is cruel and inhumane. Most tests they are put through require an injury or disease to be fixed, this means that the experimenters must do harm to the test subjects such as burning, cutting, depriving of food and water, shocking, drowning, and giving them cancer or diseases. For example in a study done on viral infection at Southwestern Research Institute three monkey’s died due to rapid disease progression before personnel could intervene.

  4. An argument against working out people make is that it causes you to always be sore right after. People don’t want to work out because feeling sore, fatigued, or exhausted isn’t something they always want to deal with. But the truth is the only time you truly feel sore is after working out for the first time. If you continually work out the feeling of being sore won’t be a problem, this is because as you keep working out your muscles adapt and get stronger. According to Invitehealthblog.com, “It’s true that you will start to feel less sore as your body adapts to your workouts and learns to distribute the workload across your muscle fibers more effectively.” Therefore, being sore isn’t a proper excuse for not working out.

  5. The college athletes who want to get paid feel they should get paid, because they’re the ones putting all the time and effort into workouts and practices to perform at their best. Most college sports have practices five or six times a week, and that’s a lot of time when you have classes. However, if they really love the game they should be happy that they even have the chance of playing a sport in College. Most College athletes have been playing their sport since they were little kids, and every coach tells them the number one goal is to have fun. If College athletes start to get paid for playing, then the athletes treat the game like work instead of the game they love, and that’s bad for the sports.

  6. Many people believe that the work ethic athletes presume to have only apply to their sports. They say that athletes don't work hard in class and flat out just don't care about anything besides their sports. In reality, students that participate in sports have a higher rate of graduation then non athletes. This shows that student athletes care more about more then just their athletic success. According to the NCAA, 82 percent of Division one athletes graduate compared to non athletes who have a 64 percent graduation.

  7. Football is one of the most popular sports in America but, it is also one of the most dangerous sports to play. It seems just about every week you hear about football players having concussions; or any other serious injuries. Even though the NFL is changing rules, at the end of the day it is up to the players, to protect themselves and others on the field. Yes, football is becoming safer, but everytime the ball is snapped any player has the opportunity to get injured. Anything can happen when you step on the field because of how hard people hit, how aggressive players are; and how fast the game is being played. On October 16th, 2010 Eric Legrand, a junior on Rutgers football team, suffered a spinal cord injury which made him paralyzed from the neck down. On any play, whether it be practice or in the game, this scenario can happen to any player involved in the sport.

  8. Since Division 1 Universities are able to give out scholarships many people believe it's almost like they own you because of how much time and commitment you will have to give back to the program. If an athlete is given an athletic scholarship there sport is pretty much there job, and they are getting there school paid for by playing a sport. On the other hand for Division 3 athletes scholarships are not an option. So these athletes are putting in the same amount of work a week, which can be up to four hours a day for every division, but the only difference is they are not being paid. Division 3 athletes put in the same amount of time and commitment that Division 1 athletes do not because they are forced too, but because that's how much they love their sport.

Many people say music doesn't make a movie interesting because at the end of the day it's the characters who are doing the acting which, I disagree. Many of us have watched many horror movies that were scary based off of the music being played in the background. Which there's times in Horror movies where there are no actors acting yet the audience are still intensely watching. The only reason why the audience are watching is because of the music. When it's dark, with no lights, and you begin to hear electrify music you begin to suspect something terrible about to happen because of the sound of the music. Music makes everything suspenseful. Think about a time where you were just walking at night and you heard a simple "boom" that made you jump, it's the same thing in horror films nothing changes. According to the time magazine, one big reason why music in horror movies play a big role is because music is good at making our flesh creep in a way a person cannot. Which makes perfect sense because of the ultimate sound in music.

  10. The general perception is that people who cannot make friends in college are mostly introverts. They believe that these people were lonely throughout their life and never really had much friends to begin with, even during high school. The problem with this argument is that it is based on the assumption that people are introverts. When individuals join college they might be really confident and looking forward to life in college. But the problem is,it is really hard to find people who actually like your personality and with whom it is easy for you to make a connection with. Not only that but also students, as stated in the previous paragraph, do not spend much time together as their classes keep on changing every semester. And the high school years are a lot different from college because as people get older they interact with each other less and having a limited circle of friends. As a study conducted by the New York times shows that people usually have a casual conversation with their “friends”, which doesn’t last for more than five minutes. Thus probability of making really good friends in college is really less.-Taimur Iftikhar

  11. Football can positively impact your life yes, but football can also be cruel and unforgiving. while traits gained while playing football can help in your future success the underlying risk are detrimental. Such injuries could end your football career but others could have a negative effect on you in the coming years. They say Kids should be very cautious about playing football the risk of severe long term effects are now just being brought to the forefront, With new information on concussions and possible CTE a condition gained from repeated blows to the head. but the life lessons learned and life long friends gained while playing far out weigh the chance of injury. Also Football builds character and strong willpower that will help in your academic and personal life. Furthermore with any sport there is a chance of injury ,for example bicycling brings in 200,000 injury a year. That’s just below the amount of injuries in football per year, yet nobody is up in arms about the safety of riding a bike.

  12. An argument made against playing sports in college would be that you need to be focusing on school. People pay tons of money to go to college and have to work hard as is, so they wouldn't even consider it due to time management. You only really would only have bad time management if you procrastinated on your school work and studies. If you competed in a collegiate sport you would be forced to have better time management, as you would be on a busier schedule in the class and on the playing field. When being a part of the sport you build strong friendships, team skills, and better health through physical activity. If athletes can be just as successful in the classroom, as well as playing the sport they enjoy, then time management is no excuse for not competing in athletics.

  13. Despite the positive effects of caffeine many still argue against its use because some believe people can become too heavily reliant or addicted to it. If you depend on caffeine every day to keep you functioning and running it can become part of your routine. One day you might not be able to get your coffee and this can mess up your whole morning due to you being so used to the extra kick that it can give. The general idea is that once you start consuming caffeine you will become addicted and will not be able to stop without a difficult transition. Luckily this is not necessarily true. While caffeine can be habit forming it is not addictive in the traditional sense. According to Stromberg from Smithsonian.com the withdrawal phase is relatively short compared to more harmful addictive substances and after only about a week you can recover fully from the symptoms and be back to normal. After stopping the use of caffeine you may experience some headaches and drowsiness. Withdrawal from caffeine does not cause any detrimental lasting effects on your physical or mental health which is a key distinction between it and many addictive drugs.

  14.   In What Our Education Needs Is More F’s, Carl Singleton insist that giving more F’s to students that don’t master the material is good thing for our educational system. The author mentions how F’s would first open the eyes of parents, and the school board of education. Secondly he states parents could change their approach on the way they handle their child, by reducing T.V, and more time on homework. Also he mentions F's would "Force principals, school board, and voters to come to terms with cost as a factor in improving our educational system." Meaning getting teachers that are able to enforce giving a student a F, if the student doesn't master the material properly. Although Singleton say things that are questionable, I love how he says, “insisting on respecting the line between passing and failing would also require us to demand as much of ourselves as of our students. As every teacher knows, a failed student could be the product of a failed teacher." This statement was the breaking barrier because things contradict. If a teachers went through the same process as students, and did not master the material how can Singleton expect students to do it? So therefore I disagree with his whole claim because if you think about the world we live in today, to much enforcement isn't good because it gives power. It gives the teachers the ability to make or break you just as Police Officers have the ability to stab or shoot you.

    Counterargument

While there are health benefits to running, non-runners feel that running makes them uncomfortable because their breathing becomes heavier and their body becomes sore. They went for their first run and might have returned discouraged because they felt worse than before the run. The body was not used to being worked as hard and now it is trying to adjust to the new level of energy. Although there are times when a run feels like it created more pain than enjoyment, remember that pain is only temporary. In order to get the full benefits of running, one must give their body more than one day to get used to the adjustment. Over time, running actually strengthens the body. As the body works harder, the lungs work just as hard to increase the amount of oxygen being converted to energy. Tom Youngell, a trainer and former collegiate runner, says that “when you increase your workload, your body will learn to convert oxygen to energy at your new level of work.” Therefore, it takes time for the body to adjust to new work loads and make the run seem like a breeze.

  16. A major concern of many people concerning art careers is salary. It is widely thought that jobs in art are hard to find and that artists salaries are very small. The truth is, there are a wide variety of careers available with starting wages comparable to most other fields. For example, I’m majoring in biology and studio art. I never hear anything negative about the biology, but always for the art. However, a starting job for me in art would probably be nearly equal, if not higher paying than a biology one. Additionally, I am better with art than with bio, so there are more opportunities for me in that sense.
