PA#2: Claim, Explanation, Evidence by Example

Hello, students,

Paragraph Assignment #2 – Basic Downshifting

Post the following paragraph in the comments section below by Sunday at 5 PM and bring a hard copy to class. In the meantime, observe your environment. Look around. Take some notes.

Define and describe a problem here at Ohio Wesleyan. Start with a topic sentence that defines the problem. Then describe the problem in more detail in subsequent sentences. Finally, give a detailed example of the problem. Use the details to illuminate the description above.

Write a well-developed paragraph that follows the basic downshifting pattern we will discuss in class. Sometime over the weekend, post your paragraph to the blog as a "comment" to this assignment. Also, BRING A HARD COPY THE PARAGRAPH TO CLASS on Monday so that we can read them outside of class.

We will follow that basic pattern on all the paragraphs you write during the first weeks of the semester:

Day 1: Draft the paragraph. Blog it ASAP.

Next class day: Discuss the previous paragraph and assign the next one.

    Struggle of C Parking Passes

A major problem here at Ohio Wesleyan is the struggle to find open parking spaces with only a C parking pass. While A and B parking spaces are on the rise, the opposite is true for C parking because students with B parking passes take up those spots without punishment and places like Selby, which is B parking, are being wasted. Even though it seems that fewer students purchase a C parking pass, the amount of spaces required for these students is still significant. There have been many complaints about students with B parking passes disregarding the signs specifying C parking. As a result, available parking spots disappear quickly. To make matters worse, public safety ignores the violations of those students, allowing them to think they can park wherever they want. In addition, parking lots like Selby Stadium, which are now B parking, barely get used by the students with those passes. This location is being wasted when it could be useful for students with C parking passes who desperately search for somewhere to park and usually end up parking on the streets. As a commuter, it gets frustrating driving into campus daily and never being able to find a great parking spot meant for C parking passes. At least two or three times within the past week, I have pulled into C parking only to discover there are no spots available. From there, I try parking behind the meek aquatic center and using any available spot I can find. Finally, I hurry to get to class on time and get out of the cold. It would be much easier if there was more parking available for C parking passes.

  2. A problem at OWU, is the hours for the places to eat at on campus need to be changed. There are nine different places for students to get food on campus, and the latest any of them are open is 8:00 PM, except for the Stuy Cafe which is open until 10:00 PM, but it’s not open on the weekends. There are a lot of students who play sports here. And a lot of times it’s hard for teams to find time to practice because there are so many sports, which means some teams have to practice really late. I’m on the baseball team, and a couple days during the week we practice from 9:00-11:00 PM. After those practices I’m pretty hungry but I can’t go anywhere and use my food points because they’re all closed. So, that means if you want to get a good amount of food you have to spend money at a restaurant when you really don’t want to.

  3. At Ohio Wesleyan University, the lack of healthy food services available passed 11 o'clock arises a large problem for the students living on campus. This becomes a major problem on the weekends because Friday and Saturday tend to be days where students are awake much later than on the weekdays. After Ohio Wesleyans food services close around 8, students only have a few hours until local fast food chains close for the night and they are stuck with greasy pizza. For example, a couple nights ago around midnight, I was very hungry and didn't have anything to eat at home so my only option was to order pizza or not eat at all. Due to the fact I hadn't eaten since 11am, I decided I should get the pizza. This not only was an unhealthy choice, but it also upset my stomach in the morning after eating greasy food so late. In conclusion, Ohio Wesleyan should look into this problem to try and help their students have healthy options when trying to eat past 11 on weekends.

  4. One problem here at Ohio Wesleyan is the dining options and availability on campus. The dining hours, locations, and meal options all make it a burden to find a good meal at any time of the day. During the weekdays, Smith Hall dining does not offer breakfast at all which is inconvenient for people who live nearby and have classes later in the afternoon. Personally, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I do not have class until 2:40. Since Smith hall dining is not open for breakfast I have to go across campus to the Hamilton-Williams center to get something for breakfast. On the weekends, there are no on-campus dining options past 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays are when students on campus go out with friends and stay out late. My friends and I like to go out and get food late at night on the weekends and we are forced to go off campus because there are no on-campus options open. It would be more convenient and help students save money if there were dining options open later on the weekends, as well as more breakfast options during the week.

  5. Ohio Wesleyan has inadequate vegetarian dining options. While there is a vegetarian line in the main dining hall, this menu often lacks variety. The smaller dining options, such as the cafes in Stuy and Merrick or Bishop Cafe, offer incredibly similar menus. The only vegetarian meals served at those places are simple cheese quesadillas/grilled cheese, salads, and (occasionally) a soup. Of course, these options are better than nothing. But while only a few options seems sufficient, I have only these things to choose from everyday. It gets repetitive. Creating more vegetarian options would not only benefit vegetarians, it would also create a wider variety of meals for everyone.

  6. A big problem at Ohio Wesleyan University is that people don’t try to explore outside their circle of friends and are doing activities on their own. What it means is that people don’t try to welcome others into their group of friends. For instance, the basketball players hang out with each other and Pakistani students hang out with other Pakistani students. This is problematic because people who join the university find it hard to settle in, and make new friends since everyone is already in their group of friends. This makes it hard for new students to approach people. For example, when its lunch time, instead of people being in one place, they are scattered all over the campus . Not only then, but also on the weekends people aren’t doing activities on campus. They either stay in their fraternities and a lot of people end up going to Columbus too. Most people also spend time in their rooms and this gives the image that the campus is completely empty. This leads to people who are new on campus feeling isolated.

There are many reasons why the residence Hall, Smith Hall, may be one of the worst residence halls on campus. The elevators, especially on the east side, would only be more terrible if it was no longer functioning. The elevator is consistently being under maintenance by faculty during the morning hours, and trying to use the elevator in the morning you could be problematic especially for handicapped students since it is often out of order. It is very possible that students will run into the problem of the elevator taking too long to get to your current floor, sometimes even ten minutes. The stairs are almost always faster, and in addition to these technical problems there are many others. For example, there have been multiple cases of people urinating in the elevator which is very disgusting and unsanitary, and while those occurrences are to be blamed by the students, the university’s janitorial staff can have more efficient timing when it comes to cleaning up these acts of vandalism . Some other instances of vandalism include include writing inappropriate comments on the walls through permanent carving or through sharpie markers, making maintenance crew have to repaint the inside door.

  8. One problem here at OWU is available parking, specifically for people with a C parking pass. While there are many designated parking lots for OWU students the majority are for A or B parking passes with a limited amount of available C pass parking. To make matters worse for someone with a C pass on a regular basis persons carrying A or B parking pass will park in a designated C lot, taking away the already limited room from the persons carrying a C pass. This predicament forces C pass persons to park on the streets or at HWCC. As a student who holds a C parking pass and commutes everyday to school I find this problem to be significant; I am almost always forced to arrive early to obtain a spot at Meek Aquatic Center and even then it is hard to find an available spot. When there are no open spots at Meek Aquatic Center I am resorted to parking at HWCC, which has little parking itself, or to find a spot on the street.

  9. After a long day in class I expect my needs of starvation to be met. When I walk into Hamwell, our school cafeteria, I intend to get my food and leave. A lot of time this isn’t the case. One problem that Ohio Wesleyan students face is that it takes almost 30 minutes to get food, not only that when you get your food there are no seats. From my understanding the reason for this problem occurring is that many students finish class around the time Hamwell opens which is around 12. It’s not astonishing to see close to a thousand students trying to get food while you’re trying to get food. The minute you walk into Hamwell you must be very swift to get your food quickly. There are times where students don’t have the time to wait in the long line so they will cut in front of their friends. There are also times where students decide not to eat due to the long lines. Last week, my teammate and I planned a lunch date at 12. Planning that was the worst idea ever. To find seats we had to ask numerous students if they were leaving because if so we wanted their seats. People weren’t as nice about giving up their seats because of the wait and the process they went through to get the seats for themselves. Which we understood. The minute the workers started bringing chairs and tables outside I knew it was a problem. A problem OWU faces is the lack of space for so many number of students.

  10. One of the biggest problems at Ohio Wesleyan is the lack of parking spots. While there are many parking lots designated for students, there are not enough spots for the amount of parking passes they give out. Not only is there not enough spots there are also spots that could be used for overnight parking at Smith Resident hall that are instead meter spots. There is also a very large Parking lot next to the Corns building that is for A parking or Faculty parking that is rarely ever full. As a student who spent $175 dollars to be able to park in a B or C parking lot I find myself frustrated having to parking on Streets way to often for the amount of money I spent.

  11. There are many features that Ohio Wesleyan has to offer, but one that should be changed is the option to have late night meal choices. During finals week, there are many students that stay up late at night making sure they are prepared for their tests. Many hours spent in the library can cause hunger, and trying to study on an empty stomach does not help the students. An example of this problem is Mher Tcholakian, a freshman at Ohio Wesleyan, who has run into this problem before. “I have been at the library late at night many times, and I have been hungry, but there’s nothing to quench my hunger. Not to also add that the library is crowded and OWU would make a lot of money off of it.” The idea to improve the meal options at the library will be beneficial to both, the students and the university.

  12. One major problem here at Ohio Wesleyan is that there are very limited places to go for late night food. As a student athlete here, during the season our practices will run until around 8:30 or 9:00 pm so by the time we get out of the locker room both dining halls will be closed and we will be forced to spend real money somewhere off campus. If you don't have a car on campus this can a real problem. Another time that this problem is inconvenient is when you are up late at night either doing homework or just hanging out with your friends, the only option for food is Dominoes or Hamburger Inn, and these places can get extremely repetitive. The only place that will be open late on campus during the week is the Thomson Convenience Store, but they don't actually serve any food. I really consider this a major problem here on campus and it would awesome if they changed the dining hall hours to stay open later a couple days a week.

  13. One of the biggest issues at Ohio Wesleyan University is the slow internet. With hundreds of students living on campus, the internet service at Ohio Wesleyan should be able to keep up with the academic and recreational demands for all students. Since returning from winter break my friends and I are having more problems connecting to the BishopNet network and are being forced to use the BishopGuest. My computer has been kicked from from the network completely and many of my friends have never been able to connect in the first place. Most noticeably the service is worse on the residential side of campus, in which the internet constantly cuts in and out. Often when trying to load to the next page on my online Spanish homework, the connection would become a lot slower, or would be lost completely. Students are forced to take time to fix the issue causing their focus to be broken, all do to a poor connection.

  14. Dining hall hours are one of the largest issues facing Ohio Wesleyan Students right now. On a college campus dining services should be available at convenient times for all students. This provides students with a better experience because they will not feel rushed to fit meals into their schedule or be forced to eat off campus. Currently at OWU dining halls close at 8:00pm on the weekdays. Conflict can arise here because some sports teams have practices during the night. For example the tennis team’s Tuesday and Thursday practices start at 5:30pm and can last anywhere between 8:00 and 9:00pm. This time frame only allows tennis players to eat a very early dinner right before practice which is extremely inconvenient. After practice is over the students have to turn to off campus alternatives which is often out of the way and more expensive. Another choice is the T-Store, but that does not provide a full meal and is more similar to a convenience store. The easiest solution is extend Hamwill and Smith’s hours of operation to 9:00pm or even 10:00pm on the weekdays and then Smith’s to 8:00pm on weekends. Most of the conflict is with scheduling at night so there is no need to change the other hours. Overall this change would provide a great convenience for student athletes with late practices because it will provide them with places on campus to eat.

  15. One of the main issues that Ohio Wesleyan has is the amount of parking space that is provided. Ohio Wesleyan has many students from places all over who drive their cars to campus. But the problem is there is not enough parking spaces, around the dorms, provided for the amount of drivers that OWU has. For example, many student-athletes drive to their practices and by the time that they end practice and try to find a parking spot in their dorm area there is none. So the students have to park on the street or go park at a farther away area. This could be a problem because most practices get out when it is dark outside so if this student is alone this could cause some safety issues. There are also other issues that need to be covered with parking such as the types of passes offered by the school that could help this problem.
