PA#1 – Welcome to the Blog

Dear Students,

Welcome to the our English 105 blog. Before you leave, click on “Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)” at the bottom of the page.

For your first paragraph assignment, you will be interviewing (and be interviewed by) another student in the class.

Please write a paragraph about that student. Make sure that you capture something -- not everything -- important about your colleague. Don't try to say everything. Narrow the focus to one critical quality.

That focus will allow you to provide the kind of evidence and detail that makes the paragraph real and engaging.

For example, let's say the student is on the golf team. Surely, the student experienced one moment that ensured that he or she would be a golfer forever. Describe the student's interest, but make it real to the reader. Capture that moment.

Post the paragraph here as a comment to this assignment by Th/1/26 at 5 PM. Bring a hard copy to class on F/1/27.

  2. Claire Sterling, who is from a small town in West Jefferson Ohio, is a freshmen here at Ohio Wesleyan. She is undecided about her major so far and is taking different classes to figure out what she wants to study. Claire mainly joined this University because she was offered a place in the basketball team over here. Unlike many, she enjoys watching college basketball teams as compared to watching professional players as she believes the latter only play for the money. Claire has two other siblings both of whom are a lot older than her which makes her the youngest. Her older brother is getting married in July, and she is really excited about that. Claire is a bit shy so doesn’t have a large group of friends and doesn’t go out that much. She spends much of her time playing basketball, watching Netflix, or spending time with her boyfriend. Claire listens to different types of music according to her mood. So she listens to light music when she is sad and fast music when she is excited about something. Claire Is a very nice and a fun person to talk to who is really fond of her family and is enjoying her time here at Ohio Wesleyan University. - Taimur Iftikhar

Timmy comes from a very cachet family in Pakistan where his parents are both doctors and his sister is microbiologist. His main reason for choosing Ohio Wesleyan is because it offers a very diverse selection of majors. Where as if he stayed in Pakistan he would have two choices, to be an engineer or a doctor just because that is the norm there. Although he is undecided on his major right now, he has an interest in communications, public relations, or writing.

  11. Ohio Wesleyan University is an ideal school for those wanting to play a sport without it taking over your college career. OWU’s sports offer the same work ethic, practice, and overall experiences that students love about being on a team, without the pressures that often come with playing for a larger school. These gratifying qualities of sportsmanship are what kept Aidan O'Rourke, a freshman majoring in economics, on his tennis team through high school, and what brought him to continue playing at OWU.

  14. Anna is a creative mind that is flourishing at Ohio Wesleyan so far as her artistic abilities continue to grow and be pushed. One of the main events that spurred her interest with the arts was the gift of a pottery wheel from her uncle. Her skills in ceramics continued to develop throughout high school as she took ceramic classes and competed in ceramic competitions. As Anna transitioned into college she has been exposed to more forms of art. Her art 2D and photography courses have been pushing her into unfamiliar territory. Despite her unfamiliarity, Anna enjoys the challenge of being able to branch out and get a better understanding of other artistic fields other than ceramics. Overall these new experiences have been enjoyable for Anna as OWU has provided a learning environment through its art classes to cultivate and grow her own creativity.

  15. Dr. Burns is proud to say that he has found his calling in life, which is to educate others. Born and raised in Ohio, Dr Burns attended the University Of Wooster, and ever since then he has been passing on his knowledge to others. After 40 years of being a professor his career here at the Ohio Wesleyan is sadley coming to end. While being a professor Dr. Burns really enjoys spending his time star gazing, and learning about what’s beyond our skies. His love for educating is so great that he writes about astronomy once a week just for others to read. Even though his career of being a professor is coming to an end, there is no doubt in my mind that he will not only continue to educate others, but continue to keep educating himself.

  16. Joey Sichenzia realizes that his desire to be an investment banker is "all about the school work," but his competitive spirit and determination are most present in his participation on the Ohio Wesleyan lacrosse team. He defines the challenges he faces as the goalie on the team as physical and mental. Although his position as goalie does not require a great deal of running during games, the frequent running during practice builds physical stamina. However, the right mental attitude is just as important as the physical component. As he puts it, "Your body wants to give out, but you can't let it. You gotta keep pushing through." That attitude can lead to moments of great emotional intensity during games. His eyes lit up as he described beating his team's in-state rivals last year during the state-wide tournament. They had beaten his team by one point earlier in the season, but his team "ended their season" with the victory.
